Transit Camp 2023 is being held on campus on March 18th! It is a great way to learn how to advocate for a better transit system, and meet others passionate about public transportation!

Tote Bags are in! If you ordered a GAPSS fundraising tote, pickup will be Thursday and Friday this week (March 16th and 17th) from the GAPSS office (Tory 3-87).

Pickup times are as follows: 

  • Thursday - 9:00 am - 3:00 pm and 5:00 - 6:00 pm

  • Friday - 9:00 am - 3:30 pm and 5:00 - 6:00 pm

Early pickup is also available if you attend the GAPSS Semi-Annual General Meeting this Wednesday (March 15) from 5:00 - 6:00 pm.

Join GAPSS and Yasushi Ohki from Green Violin on a walk around some of their projects in the McCauley Area. We will be discussing how to improve the well-being of our neighborhoods by building innovative spaces where sustainable housing and community come together. 

The event will take place on March 9th from 4:00-5:00pm, and we will be meeting at 10878 95 St (the Italian Centre Shop). 

There will be a group of GAPSS members traveling together from the HUB Mall LRT entrance, meeting at 3:20-3:25pm, more information on that on the eventbrite page.

GAPSS Skating Day!

GAPSS Skating Day!

RESCHEDULED SKATING DAY!!!

The new date is going to be Sunday February 12th, from 1-3pm at the same location. We will be keeping the eventbrite link the same.

There are free skate rentals at the rink, so don’t worry if you don’t have your own skates. We recommend helmets and any other protective equipment that you want to bring, and if you don’t want to skate at all, you are welcome to just come to hang out with everyone!

This event requires some physical activity, and thus there is the risk of injury to participants. Please do not do anything beyond your skill level, or anything that may likely result in harm to yourself or others. Pictures may be taken of event participants for the GAPSS social media, consent will be asked before taking any pictures, so you will not have your picture posted if you don't want to.

Participants will be required to sign waivers prior to participating in the event, when you arrive please come talk to a GAPSS member to sign. If you are under 18 years old, you will need to reach out to us at gapss@ualberta.ca, as your parent or guardian will be required to sign an informed consent form in order for you to attend.

Deadline to Apply for City of Edmonton Planning Summer Student (Zoning Bylaw Renewal)

1 temporary full-time position for 4 months intended specifically for students currently enrolled in an urban planning, human geography planning or related post-secondary degree program, commencing in May 2023

Be part of the team that is writing and implementing a new Zoning Bylaw for Edmonton. The Zoning Bylaw is the City’s main regulatory tool for enabling land development, and Zoning Bylaw Renewal is a comprehensive review of this important tool that will seek to re-imagine what we regulate and how we regulate it. 

Not only do you get to be part of an impactful and engaging initiative, within a diverse and enthusiastic team, you’ll get hands-on experience with development services processes (rezoning, subdivision, development permits, etc.). You’ll have a chance to impact services essential to building a vibrant Edmonton.

Knowledge GAPSS: Panel Discussion with Emerging Planning Leaders

Join us in the Planning Studio, Tory 3-57, on January 26, from 5-6 pm, for a panel discussion. The panel consists of three planners who recently graduated from the U of A and will be moderated by BA Planning student Mon Rosete.

The planners will be sharing their journey from graduation to their professional career, thoughts on the recent budget passed by City Council, their advice to students and more!

Participating planners include Kaelin Koufogiannakis from the City of Edmonton, Croy Johnston from Beljan Development, and Nicole Cronkhite from V3.

Panellists: 

Kaelin Koufogiannakis, City of Edmonton

Kaelin Koufogiannakis is a 2020 graduate of the BA in Planning program who currently works as a Planner in the City of Edmonton's Planning Coordination section. She previously worked with the District of West Vancouver and Stantec Consulting on projects ranging from mixed use infill to new statutory plans. She is passionate about shaping sustainable and inclusive communities, active transportation, and child-friendly planning.

Croy Johnston, Beljan Development

Croy is the Urban Strategist at Beljan Development and holds a variety of board positions throughout the Edmonton community. He has a passion for diverse interactions, community involved places, and unique concepts. At Beljan, his primary role is managing preliminary concept and design development, land use approvals/ entitlements of projects, and acquisition due diligence.

Nicole Cronkhite, V3

Nicole is an urban planner with V3 Companies of Canada Ltd. She completed her Master of Science in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Alberta in April, 2022. She previously worked in Interior Design and Construction Management and holds an Interior design Technology diploma and Bachelor of Technology from NAIT. She was recently appointed to the GEF Seniors Housing Board of Directors by the City of Edmonton’s Mayor and Council.

The tote bag design incorporates elements of geography and planning and is printed on a high-quality canvas tote bag supplied by a local screen printer. For just $20 you can help support GAPSS and get a stylish tote bag for your notebooks and textbooks! What better way to show club pride! 

Tote bags are being ordered through a pre-order process. The order form will be open for the next few weeks, and once orders are in we will have the totes printed. When the totes arrive, we will reach out via email to inform you about pick-up options on campus.

We want to know your feedback! Please fill out the Fall 2022 Academic Satisfaction Survey for PLAN and HGEO courses. The information collected from the survey will be compiled and circulated to HGEO and PLAN department heads, to provide them with academic feedback from the fall semester.

We have recently updated our requirements for the Journal and will accept submissions from 200 level and above PLAN and HGEO courses, or related subject matter. So if you got an A- or above on a paper or project please submit to gapss@ualberta.ca with the subject “Journal submission”.

Topophilia is a journal published by GAPSS that highlights research done by undergraduate and graduate students in Human Geography and Urban Planning, or topics related to this subject matter. GAPSS aims to celebrate student achievements in papers and projects by publishing them and making them available to all who are interested!
