Winter Whimsy Warming Huts!

Have you ever explored or came across a winter warming hut? We talk about winterizing our city here in Edmonton, but most people have barely heard of these!

In Winnipeg every winter, warming huts are set up along trails for skating and walking, and there’s actually a few near us along the River Valley and the little bubbles at City Hall! They keep a space warm for anyone who decides to brave the cold (though, it’s been quite warm recently).

I’ve been trying to look into passive heating techniques/technologies recently, because they would really benefit our open spaces and winter interests. In these huts, you can admire the birds nest in the bare trees and watch animals cut across the bright white banks, or just close your eyes and hear the wind whistle past! All while being so warm. Who doesn’t love being cozy?

Perhaps keep an eye out for these on your walk along the River Valley this winter, and maybe we can get even more creative for the next winter with these structures! Personally, I’d love to see these on my walks, or maybe get involved in conceptualizing them. The reason as to why I mentioned Winnipeg is because they have an annual competition for winter hut designs, please check them out here for some inspiration for winter strategies Art Meets Ice: Introducing the 2026 Warming Huts. Maybe we can have one of these competitions ourselves next year..? 😏
