Vanessa Reviews SUB’s Filistix
A few years ago, I discovered that there was a Filistix in the basement of the Student’s Union Building (SUB) and was immediately hooked. Offering a variety of Filipino food, my go-to has always been the chicken adobo. It’s been quite some time (at least a year!) since I've last had Filistix, as their pricing and my student status make it hard to justify eating there regularly. However, the other day I was feeling nostalgic, so I decided to treat myself as a way to help curb my overwhelming end-of-term stress.
I was pleased to see that they now offer small and regular size options with a notable price difference! Although still somewhat on the more expensive side, this change is more encouraging to those of us trying to save money where we can.
As always, I opted for the classic chicken adobo in a small size, which cost me $12.08 after tax.
Unfortunately, the meal was not as good as how I remember it to be. The chicken, sauce, and additional spice I added to it was still yummy. The rice to slaw ratio was a big let down, as the slaw was overpowering to the rice. It felt like no matter how much of it I ate, there was still so much leftover. This can be a good thing for some, but comparatively I finished the rice in a few bites. The rice itself was really dry, with there not being enough sauce left over from the chicken to mix with all of it.
When the post-meal (honestly mid-meal) clarity hit, I remembered that even a few years ago, Filistix seemed to struggle with portion control. So if you’re a fan of consistency, I wouldn’t bet too much on getting that from this location. I haven’t eaten at their downtown location enough to presume this to be company issue.
Despite its convenient location right on campus, the price point in comparison to the food itself was an overall disappointment. As controversial as it may be, I unfortunately rate the SUB location a 6/10.
Take what I say with a grain of salt! I walked past during lunch a few days later, and the line was full, which goes to show that people still enjoy their food. Perhaps I caught them on an off day!
