Logan Reviews Yiannis Taverna
Yiannis Taverna, known as “Edmonton’s Original Greek Restaurant,” is conveniently located at 10444 Whyte Avenue. I have visited this restaurant a few times, most recently for their New Year’s Eve dinner. On holidays and Friday and Saturday nights, the restaurant comes alive with music and a traditional Greek dancer. The atmosphere shifts from calm and conversational to loud, energetic, and celebratory! This time, the music and performance completely filled the space, making conversation difficult, but also making the night feel like an event rather than just a meal. While both experiences were enjoyable, it is something to keep in mind depending on the type of meal or occasion you are looking for.
This time, I ordered two appetizers instead of a main dish to get more variety. I chose the Chicken Souvlakia Appetizer for $17, which included two charbroiled skewers infused with lemon and oregano, served with pita bread and tzatziki. I also ordered the Kotosoupa Avgolemono (chicken soup) for $10, made with egg, lemon, and rice. Both dishes were excellent. Although my total with a tip was over $30, I felt the quality justified the price.
On previous visits, I have tried the Plevra Choirinou Kreatos (baby back ribs) for $39. The portion was very large and arguably worth the cost, as it included a full rack of ribs, a whole potato, and a generous serving of vegetables. I had leftovers to bring home! I have also ordered the Chicken Souvlakia meal for $29, which came with two skewers, rice, Greek salad, and tzatziki. Again, the portion size was impressive!
Overall, this is a pricey restaurant, but the cost reflects the authentic food, lively atmosphere, and solid (though not exceptional) service. I would rate it an 8.5 out of 10, with the point and a half deducted mainly due to price. While the cost is understandable, it is not especially student friendly. That said, if you are looking to splurge for a special occasion, it is well worth it and I highly recommend it!
